In February 2026, Tom Muse returned to his old stomping ground at Wigan & Leigh College to take part in their Festival of Engineering & Construction at the Pagefield Road Campus.
During his visit, Thomas reconnected with former lecturers, met the next generation of emerging talent, and shared insights from his own journey as a student and apprentice.
Tom said:
“The apprenticeship route has worked extremely well for me, providing a strong balance between practical and theoretical learning, with each complementing the other and giving me a broader knowledge and understanding of the construction industry. While it can be challenging at times, I receive excellent support from senior members of the Murraywood team. Their knowledge and experience are invaluable and strongly complement my university studies.
I progressed from Wigan & Leigh College, completing my BTEC and HNC, to University of Central Lancashire, where I am currently studying for my Civil Engineering Degree. I will be graduating next year before completing my EPA to finish my apprenticeship. Throughout my apprenticeship, I have gained real on-site experience and learning opportunities that you don’t get on a full-time degree course. Working alongside professionals from a range of disciplines has significantly increased my confidence, both at university and in the workplace.
I am looking forward to completing the final stage of my apprenticeship at the University of Central Lancashire and continuing my career with Murraywood.”
