I joined Murraywood Construction in November 2017 as a Setting out Engineer with the intention of completing a formal certification in Civil Engineering with them.
In September 2018 it was formally agreed I would be undertaking a part time HNC in Civil engineering, fully funded by Murraywood. Now at the halfway point, looking back, I can happily say that it has been the best decision I have made to stretch me and my mind since making the career move into Engineering.
Having not been in any formal education for over 5 years, stepping back into a classroom was both jarring and exciting, but as the weeks progressed, I found my feet and persisted to make my work and education balance nicely. My learning does not stop at the door to university though, working under highly experienced staff mean every day is a school day, and every day is different.
Throughout the year I have felt confident in the certain knowledge that if I need time or assistance with coursework, it would be gladly given. Whether it be from the groundworkers, managers or senior engineers from within Murraywood or the managers and personnel of primary contractors, everyone seems very happy and willing to spend the time to impart their knowledge on me to increase the chances of me becoming the best I can be, both as an engineer and as a person.
My experience to date has made me decide that after completing the HNC I hope to continue my education whist working for Murraywood and stream onto the second year of a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering hopefully at LJMU.
